The Great Blue Heron
Despite being somewhat of an outdoorsman, I’ve never been too good (or interested in taking the time to get better) at shooting nature. I am also terrible when it comes to identifying anything but the most basic flora and fauna. My family is lucky enough to live a stone’s throw from on of Philadelphia’s hidden gems, the John Heinz National Wildlife Refuge, which sits right on the border of Philadelphia and Delaware County. The refuge is immense, and I’ve used it for everything from running, taking the kayaks out, and taking the little guy for a walk. We visited this past weekend and were treated to this great blue heron, who hung around for the entirety of our stay. Of course, I can refer to him as a great blue heron after I asked about 50 birders to help me identify it, or else this post would have just been titled “Some Kind of Big Wading Bird.”
