Taking a Snow Day

For as long as I can remember, I’ve wanted to own a pair of snowshoes. I love the hush of the woods on a snowy day, and as a teenager I’d lace up my boots and head out into the local forest for long walks, disappearing for hours until dinner was ready. I’ve always held off on buying a pair of snowshoes, though, because, given my luck, I’d buy them and it would never snow again. Even though I haven’t pulled the trigger on the snowshoes, it’s been a crummy last two winters for snow lovers (as opposed to 2008 and 2009, when Pennsylvania was absolutely dumped on and my teacher wife danced gleefully each time her school’s snow number was called over the radio).

We got lucky a few weeks ago when Mother Nature graced us with a good inch of snow. I happened to be running at Ridley Creek State Park that day and was smart enough – a first – to have my gear in the trunk.

The horse farm at the park was gorgeous in the snow. I hung out there among the nickering horses until both camera bag and photographer was soaked. I stopped, too, at Rose Tree Park in Media where the wide-open fields were untouched. A great day all around until I ran my car into a curb on the way home!
